mellifera consists of an on-line interactive environment in Second Life which is linked to a complimentary series of real-time exhibitions in gallery and museum spaces. Central to this ecologically sensitive artwork is the artists’ direct engagement with various aspects of bee behaviour at Queensland Brain Institute, where researchers are investigating cognition, navigation and communications in the honey bee. The artists’ poetic and scientific interactions with the bees has inspired the development of mellifera’s experimental series of human / computer interfaces, which provide modes of sensory delivery for both virtual and real-world participant interactivity. They are creating a space that allows the viewer to interact with artificial life created in virtual worlds through direct physical engagement with various interfaces – providing a platform for the investigation of posthuman technologies and modes of sensory delivery. The launch at gaffa introduces key artificial life organisms that are central to the developing virtual environment, providing a taste of the real-world interactive interfaces due to premiere in Brisbane in August 2009 at ‘the block’, QUT.

This project has been assisted by the Australian Government through the Australia Council, its arts funding and advisory body.

mellifera : neoNascent is a rebirth of the mellifera environment on the OpenSim platform. Inspired by an invitation to show mellifera at this years Freeplay Festival in Melbourne we have completely reworked the environment and also created a new version of mellifera – echoes of travels in new territories (2010). documentation of a generative virtual environment created during a ten day residency at the RMIT Virtual Reality Centre in Melbourne. This work creates a real time 3d environment from data it collects from the ‘mellifera’ environment in Second Life and explores ways of representing and re-representing data and audio-visual experiences in a generative environment.

This project and residency was supported by RMIT School of Art and the Design Reseach Institute, as part of ‘Drawing Out 2010′.

the terra.mellifera eco-system is no longer stable due to the introduction of a virtual bacteria that has been introduced through the presence of avatars in the space.

essential is doing ous best to keep the balance, but, it is also possible for visiting avatars to help move the energy collected by the mellifera, and in turn help heal those that have become infected.

in fact it is now evident that the mellifera population is becoming more and more reliant on visiting avatars working along side of essential to keep the bacteria in check.

gaffa opening night

some shots from the real world launch at gaffa gallery. The virtual bees or the mellifera were release by the push of an antique button, by Australia Council chairman James Strong AO. It was a busy night and the anticipation of the maiden flight could be felt in the air, followed by applause as a stream of mellifera flew free publicly for the first time.

new postcard from the metaverse

i have been busy installing and testing an opensim install (as both a research project in its own right, and a backup plan for terra.mellifera if second life goes down during a gallery install) and working on programming for the arduino based second life autonomous agent and client, based on libOpenMetaverse . At the same time terra.mellifera has been going through its life cycle and picking up a bit of interest amoungst virtual photographers.
